A Talk about being truely beautiful the health way

To educate the youths of TCPJ on being beautiful the healthy way, the Ugly for Beauty campaign has invited two guest speakers to presents two talk sessions on the 10 September 08.
The first was Dr. Adnan Omar, a psychologist from Taylor's University College whose topic was the 'What lies beneath the perfect body.'

His talk was amusingly entertaining and yet very educational as he was able to interact well with the audiences on the methods used on famous icons in order for them to look perfect. Apparently photoshop airbrush does a much better job than bust enhancements.

He also went on to reminding youths that genetics also plays a part in body shapes.
'If your parents have big bones, you will be born with big bones!" he said. A statement that was acknowledged by the audiences with nods and mutters of agreement.

The second speaker was the senior dietitian from the Institute Jantung Malaysia, Ms. Foong Pui Hing. Well versed in the human body and its mechanics, Ms. Foong adviced students on proper food intake to match their lifestyles. For example, the proper amount of protein to be taken is about the size of your palm excluding your fingers. So the next time you're helping yourself with chicken or fish, measure it with your palm and that's your required intake of protein for your body type!

Ms. Foong also touched on eating disorders (aneroxia and bulimia) and how to recognised the symptoms of a victim so that help can be found for them.
Overall, both sessions were proven to be interactive and beneficial for the students as questions and inquiries were thrown forth endlessly.

Next time on Ugly for Beauty:
A Fitness Demonstration by guest speaker, Noel Chelliah, ACE (American Council on exercise) Certified Personal Trainer.
Date: 18 Sept 08, Thurs
Time 12-2pm
Venue: B1 - 05 -13, TCPJ

Get ready for a hands on, interactive workshop to learn how to exercise well and exercise smart. See you there!

Ugly for Beauty: All Systems Go!

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

The official launch of the Ugly for Beauty campaign took off today not without minor hiccups. At 1230 noon, the doors opened and students and guests started pouring in. Students who registered at the entrance were giving a lucky draw number, a booklet and an evaluation form, all of which that later served a purpose.

Registration outside LT1

The event began with our charismatic MC, Amir greeting everyone including our beloved programme director, Ms Josephine; our spokesperson, Kevin Zahri; the media and all the students. Ms Josephine then expressed her support for the campaign's purpose and encourages students to keep following the campaign. Kevin Zahri later then presented a short speech on the reality of body images and how this campaign hits the nail right over the head. Project director, Asha Raghu then explained the purpose and agenda behind the campaign symbol, a hybrid of a butterfly and a moth and how it depicted between true beauty and the artificial beauty.

A short video clip was presented to show the truth behind the campaign's research. Interviews were conducted throughout the earlier weeks to gain the target audience's opinions and thoughts.

The campaign was then officiated with the ripping off of the moth wing from the campaign symbol to show that we are breaking free from the need to obtain unnatural beauty.

....After!

After a brief photo session, Mr Zahri was given the honour of selecting out the lucky draw numbers and presenting the prizes to the lucky ones in audiences.

After that,a band of musicians called Alice and the Hippies performed, breaking out in a lovely song for the audiences.

Young and talented equals true beauty

After the short entertainment, the Q & A session with Kevin Zahri began. Proving to be most educational and interesting, Kevin Zahri was able to explain the different types of bodies and he stressed on how each individual is different. He particularly reminded students that they should not follow the diets and regimes used by celebrities as their body and lifestyles are worlds apart.

With the end of the launch at 2pm, goodie bags were handed out at the exit and everyone went home (or back to class), undoubtedly pleased with what they have (their own body and their goodie bags)

Reminder from the organizers!
Students are encouraged to hang on to their programme booklets as there are some short quick facts inside how to lead a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, there will be a quiz on the 24th of September (wed) during common hour based on the booklet.

A special thanks to all those who came and supported us whole heartedly, Voize.my, the media, our sponsors, lecturers and friends.

Exercise is for Everyone

Monday, September 1, 2008

Exercise is for everyone – not just athletes or the glorified icons in the entertainment industry.

Our bodies are magnificently created and have not been designed to stay still, but to move. If you've never imagined yourself as someone capable of living an active and healthy lifestyle – well, now is never too late to start.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that all healthy adults aged 18-65 engage in moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for at least 30 minutes per session on 5 or more days per week OR vigorous-intensity aerobic activity for at least 20 minutes 3 or more days per week.

In addition to this, you should perform activities that maintain or increase muscular strength and endurance a minimum of two days each week (8 to 10 strength-training exercises, 8 to 12 repetitions of each exercise).

If you were to do more than the above recommended minimum, you would experience even greater health benefits.

Moderate intensity is when you're working out hard enough to start to sweat and raise your heart rate. If you're gasping for breath when you’re running, then that's considered to be 'vigorous intensity'.

The reason people get out of shape is because they don’t move enough. If you're a healthy adult, then regardless of your past experience or background - you can begin an exercise program moving gradually from low-intensity movements and gradually increasing the intensity, duration, and the number of times you exercise.

Walking itself is a fantastic way to get started with a moderate-intensity activity. You could also exercise anywhere, so you don't need a gym to get your daily dose of physical activity. All we need is some determination and the desire to make that difference in our lives to live a more active and healthier life.

About the Author - Noel Chelliah is an American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certified Personal Trainer and a Computer Science graduate with many years of experience in health and fitness since 2000. Actively involved in the fitness industry as a Personal Trainer and freelance writer, he has coached and inspired many individuals to successfully reach their fitness goals. Noel specializes in Weight Management and Strength Training.

About UGLY for BEAUTY

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Messages about what is the perfect body looks are constantly delivered by the entertainment industry. Young adults are bombarded by perfect looking celebrities and models in television, movies, magazines and advertisements.

The tall, dark, muscular man would get the girl and the thin beautiful women always get the man. The most successful movie stars are thin and beautiful; and muscular and handsome.

All of these adds up to a standard that is very difficult to meet, a standard that is contributing to the disturbances in body image and eating behavior.

Young adults would go to the extremes to achieve that perfect body figure. Hence, the young adult’s priorities are to gain that beauty no matter what the consequences, even if it results in health deterioration.

There are numerous unhealthy means of losing weight such as drinking coffee and smoking only, drinking water and lemon to suppress hunger, sleeping more than usual to avoid eating, consuming laxatives, liposuction, and excessive exercise and many more.

These unhealthy diet and exercise would cause malnutrition, dehydration, muscle Atrophy, anorexia, bulimia, cancer, low blood pressure, low blood count, heart attack, kidney failure, and many more.

The ‘Ugly for Beauty’ Campaign aims to debunk the false idea of beauty championed by the glorified icons in the entertainment industry, by portraying the reality of beauty as a whole. At the same time, ‘Ugly for Beauty’ Campaign wants to throw light on unhealthy living by youths who want to achieve that beauty which is defined by the entertainment industry.

‘Ugly for Beauty’ Campaign sees the future where youths who are exposed to the entertainment industry are more confident and self assured by their bodies and are not affected by the influence of false body image portrayed by the glorified icons.

‘Ugly for Beauty’ acknowledges the fact that looks do matter, however, life matters too!
